Region: Swartland
Owner: Charles Back
Wine Maker: Charl du Plessis (Dec 2001)
Sealing the Swartland in a bottle, is how Charl du Plessis sums up his job at this cutting-edge Malmesbury cellar, owner by Fairview’s Charles Back. Their wines certainly reflect the region: wide, warm, spicy, slightly out of the mainstream. Having made an international mark with regular warm-blooded reds (shiraz, merlot, pinotage), the home farm (though planted predominantly with shiraz and mourvèdre) is seeing the first fruits of more adventurous varieties. Two barrels of 2004 Petite Sirah look ‘outstanding’. A Sangiovese and Barbera are due out soon. Grenache, carignan, tannat, souzão, tempranillo, primitivo (zinfandel) and… and… wait in the wings. Among white wine farm Amos Kuil’s site-selective plantings is a crouchen/semillon cross: nouvelle.
