Wine Maker: South African Wine Industry
The entire South African wine industry has worked together to create this exciting innovative wine brand, and to ensure that all profits from its sale will be used to train more than 2 000 previously disadvantaged people as wine stewards by 2010, when South Africa will host the FIFA World Cup. Half of these learners will be drawn from those currently employed in the hospitality industry, and the balance will be unemployed. Training began in the second week of July 2008 and will continue throughout South Africa until the end of May 2010.
The whole industry was invited to submit wine samples and the six winners were selected blind by the members of the Cape Wine Makers Guild using the same criteria as they use for their Auction wines. Suppliers to the industry have sponsored or subsidised everything from design to dry goods to legal work, bottling and publicity. The result is a fabulous premium red wine, selling at a great price while generating a significant contribution to the training with every bottle sold.
This new brand is called Fundi (pronounced foon-dee) which is derived from the isiZulu word umfundi which means ‘learner’ and in South African English has come to mean an expert or learned person. The label features a stylized sunflower, a symbol of hope and of African sunshine. A unique feature on every Fundi bottle is a beaded decoration which can also act as a glass marker. There are six different bead designs to collect. The beads are being bought from folk who sell beaded craft at the side of the road, helping informal workers in the winter season when there is little income from their handiwork.
When you support Fundi you are making a positive contribution to the future of wine in South Africa, and to the livelihoods of those who serve it.
