South Africa > Wineries > Riebeek Cellars
Owner: 63 shareholders
Wine Maker: Zakkie Bester & Eric Saayman (Dec 1999/Jan 1997), with Alecia Hamman ( since December 2004 )
From this cellar the message is ‘an exceptional red wine year’, particularly for shiraz . Ripeness at low sugar levels resulted in wines with slightly lower alcohols, report Zakkie Bester and Eric Saayman. Malbec and petit verdot were produced on a commercial scale for the first time, and the chenin looks ‘exceptionally good’. They planted the first 15ha of sauvignon, and this year they’ll harvest a maiden viognier. Riebeek is one of the partners in Cape Coastal Wines, a new marketing company set up to increase exports, initially to the US (their Few Good Men range already flies there). An empowerment project will see 150 farm and cellar workers in joint-ownership of a newly developed wine farm.
