It’s all systems go as Cybercellar gears up for Black Friday, the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season on Friday 25 November. This day sees many online as well as brick and as brick-and-mortar stores offering substantial discounts for this one day.
Jumping the queue, Cybercellar will go even further with deals for the whole week, starting on Monday, 21 November. Each day will have once-off “one day only deals”; so make sure you do not miss out!
‘’Shoppers can rest easy that we are ready for the influx of online traffic to our website for our Black Friday daily deals. Unlike many sites which crashed under the pressure last year, we easily managed the full four days, in particular Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and will without doubt do the same this time around,” says Gavin Forsyth, Chief Marketing Officer at Cybercellar.Black Friday is a shopping holiday originating in the US. This day, taking place the day after the traditional Thanksgiving holiday, is the official mark of the start of the Christmas season. Originating in 1938, this day has seen most retailers opening for the full 24 hours and offering huge discounts on products. Images of Black Friday are displayed around the world showing manic scenes of endless queues and fighting masses trying to claim their share of promotional offers.
2012 saw the first Black Friday take place in South Africa, interestingly online, with an eCommerce brand announcing huge discounts for the day on their site. The following year saw the trend picking up pace as many other online retailers jumped on the bandwagon and slashed their prices for the day. Cybercellar.com however, decided to take it a step further and rather offer Black Friday deals for the whole week instead of the just the one day.
The fact that Black Friday was picked up by the online retailers first is particularly interesting in the South African case, as elsewhere in the world sees the online sites offering promotions on Cyber Monday. This is the equivalent to Black Friday in the Brick and Mortar stores, but sees the promotions running on the Monday after Thanksgiving. The trend was first seen in 2005 when Shop.org mentioned in a Press Release that many online retailers were seeing increased sales especially on the Monday after Thanksgiving. This has since led to Cyber Monday being the dominant online shopping day all over the world.
Back in South Africa, 2014 saw Brick and Mortar stores taking part in the Black Friday festivities with Checkers running one of the first Black Friday promotions. Every year since, has seen this shopping day growing exponentially in popularity. More and more retailers are taking on a mass promotional strategy and offering customers some of the lowest discounts before the Christmas Season fully kicks in.
