With summer around the corner, there has been a mad dash to gyms, CrossFit studios and health shops all over the country with one thing on everyone’s mind: Summer body. Getting into a bikini in under a month has terrified everyone who has been indulging a bit too much in the coziness of winter, and with only a few weeks left to slim and trim, calories is the first thing on everyone’s mind!
We feel your pain, and in preparation for summer, we have done a bit of reading into how many calories each of your favourite drink contains, so that you know which ones you can stay clear of. We couldn’t leave you high and dry, sitting next to the pool, trimmed and bronzed without a glass of tipple in hand could we? I mean, what is a long hot summer’s afternoon without a gorgeous gin and tonic or glass of Sauvignon Blanc?
This deliciously crisp, sometimes green wine is the perfect pairing for afternoon salads and days at the pool. But how many calories are in a normal glass you ask? We are working on conversion rates of 5 ounces which converts to roughly 150mls, which is roughly a small glass of wine. Also, to make it easier to compare, a banana has 89 calories and a slab of chocolate, 468 calories. So, your average Sav Blanc has around 123 calories in it, and if you are watching your carbs levels too, it contains around 3 grams of carbohydrates. Winning multiple awards, the Star Hill 2014 Sauvignon Blanc is a perfect choice for summer.
Chenin’s drop slightly in calories and average around 120 calories per glass while soar compared to Sauv Blancs in carbohydrates and tip the scales at 4.9 grams per glass. These gorgeous peachy and fruity wines are obviously tempting for a reason! We could recommend the De Morgenzon DMZ Chenin Blanc.
In comparison to its white counterparts, this wine which has been described as creamy, buttery and absolutely decadent, has significantly less calories. How does 84 calories per glass sound to you? With an average 3.18 gram carbohydrate in each glass, this sounds like a good fit to watching the sun dip over the ocean on a warm evening. How about a bottle of Jordan Unoaked Chardonnay to go with that sunset?
Also significantly lower than the Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin, a rosé weighs in at only 83 calories, with a low carb content of 2.9 grams per glass. It’s no wonder this pink drink is a ladies favourite and we love the gorgeous fresh Pinotage Rosé from Delheim!
Moving onto the reds now, and we are all expecting them to be significantly higher than the whites, are we not? Well, our favourite easy drinking Cabs only have 3 calories more than our Sauvignon Blancs, with 126 calories, and come in below the Chenin’s calories and 3.82 grams Carbs. We love the 2013 Lanzarec Cabernet Sauvignon
This delicious, spicy and moreish wine is a favourite on South African tables next to a lovely steak. It contains 122 calories and 3,79 grams Carbs in each glass. This seems somewhat average for what can sometimes be a full bodied and complex wine. Why not try the Perdeberg Winery Dry Land Shiraz
Termed “the ladies favourite drinking red” there is no surprise why. Merlot contains the same amount of calories as a Rose! This, coupled with its very average amount of carbs, 3.7 grams, makes this the perfect companion for summer evenings around the braai for weight- conscious ladies! Why not try the delicious Lourensford Merlot from Somerset West!
Bubble fanatics all over the country, rejoice! Our favourite bubbled partner happens to be a dieter’s dream! With only 90 calories and carbohydrates racking up an entire 1 gram, there is no excuse not to stock the fridge for summer and bask in the sun, bubbles in hand! Why not try the Silverthorn Jewel Box?
Moving onto our favourite spirits, these prove to be somewhat anomalies. Although packed with calories, gin has very little to zero carbs. With 263 calories, this drink is still one of the most recommended to anyone taking up a summer diet. Mix in the tonic however, and the glass is packed with 32 grams of carbs. Our recommendation is to either swap out the tonic for soda water and pack the glass with lemon and mint, or find the low-sugar, low-carb options! The Bloedlemoen Gin is a must-have for summer!
Watching the sunset with a whiskey on the rocks is something every summer dream is made of. With 250 calories found in every 100 grams, so 105 in a shot, and the carbs leveling out to about 0.1 grams per serving, this golden treat is perfect for summer! Make sure you get your bottle of Ballanetines ready for that sunset!
You are expecting beer to simply top the chart on everything aren’t you? And you are also possibly wondering why we have even bothered to add it in here. Surprisingly though, there aren’t as many calories as you would think! Only 153 calories make up a can of beer! The carb side however makes up for that, with a whopping 13 grams of carbs! Certainly not ideal before a yoga class, but who can say no to an ice cold beer after a long hot day on the beach? Certainly not us, and we highly recommend the CBC Beers!
