Raka Wines based in Stanford, between Hermanus and Napier, has an array of unique terroir aspects involving the Walker Bay, Klein River Lagoon and the Akkidisberg Mountain pass. The brand has become well-known for excellent quality wines at exceptional prices with a diverse range of single cultivars and blends. Raka is a family operation and a perfect rest stop when travelling the South coast of the Overberg, boasting a new deli to complete the wine tasting experience.
Initially on the farm they ran livestock and later planted citrus trees to give it that little something extra. The first vines were planted in 1999 and these consisted of just 10 hectares including, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz. Since then each year they have added to this and currently the farm has 68 hectares present. This is comprised of various different plantings including, Pinotage, Sangiovese, Viognier, Mourvedre, Petit Verdot. Their larger plantings include Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc.
There is a real sense of family involvement at Raka. Piet and his wife Elna Dreyer are blessed with three sons and a daughter. Their eldest son Gerhard went into squid fishing after school, this allowing Piet to realise his ambition and fully focus on becoming a quality wine producer. Their youngest son Pieter is on his way to becoming Raka’s future viticulturist. Jorika, the Dreyer’s only daughter is managing the tasting room, a job she’s been doing part- time for the past four years. Then Josef, the second son, who obtained his B Agric degree from Elsenburg at the end of 2006 is now currently Raka’s winemaker. This just shows that the entire family is truly involved in every aspect of the farm and take pride in its achievements.
