When it comes to food and wine pairings, the lines can become slightly blurred – which sounds just about perfect to us! While there are some foods that pair exceptionally well with certain varietals, you are the one who should be enjoying the pairing…
Roelia Schoeman, the face and mind behind the Boozy Foodie blog, is a firm believer in this premise. Inspired by personal taste and family traditions, she has compiled a list of her ultimate food and wine pairings.
Here they are:
Riesling with Chicken Korma
Contrary to popular belief, not all rieslings are necessarily sweet-tasting fruit bombs. Nothing beats a chilled off-dry riesling on a warm summer’s day. This varietal is beautifully fragrant and we believe it deserves to get a lot more attention. Because of the delicate but well-balanced flavour, Riesling pairs well with a mild and tasty chicken korma with basmati rice, complimenting the traditional Indian spices without getting lost in it. Riesling is actually amazingly versatile!
Cabernet Sauvignon with Beef Wellington
It is a tradition in our household to still make this old-school winter warmer from scratch. Believe me, it is a labour of love, but always worth it. The savoury goodness of the juicy medium-rare beef fillet and the umami-flavour from the mushroom duxelle work wonders with a rich and meaty Cabernet Sauvignon. The full-bodied flavour and medium tannins are a perfect match for this luxurious dish.
Southern Fried Chicken and MCC
Whether you decide to go with the takeaway version of this dish or the more traditional US-style Southern cooking variety, it is always a winner. When done right, the chicken should be juicy and tasty with the breading crispy and golden-brown. Bring the crisp freshness, acidity and bubbles of an MCC to the party and it will complement the crunchy deep-fried meat wonderfully, breaking through the oiliness. As an added bonus, this pairing will elevate a very simple (and convenient) meal to a decadent treat.
