Mother Rock is a totally unique project which has been born out of a union between Johan “Stompie” Meyer and Ben Henshaw. Both men are well recognized names in the industry, Henshaw known for his success with Indigo and Stompie taking “Signature” wines to amazing heights. This incredible union between the two men has also brought together fruit from some of the best grape growers across the Cape and the fusion has created an on demand label that they have had to repeat due to popularity.
The wine is described as terroir focused wines, and the concept is to produce a wine that sings of the terroir that the grape was grown on. The first round was an answer to a resounding need in the UK market for a superb South African Chenin with a great price tag. This resulted in the Force Majeure being created and very soon, a Cinsault Rose as well as a Red Blend were create to make up the rest of the family. Force Majeure was an instant hit and promoted the two wine makers to take on the second challenge with Mother Rock.
They put their efforts into finding the perfect soils, unique vines and classical terroirs of the Swartland and undertook to conceptualizing the perfect sibling to the Force. Their focus is heavily on purity, cleanliness and creating an untouched wine. They ensure that the grapes are grown organically, and the process is as natural as it can possibly be with as little interference as possible during fermentation. The wines are lightly sulfured before bottling, but the ultimate concept of the naturalness of the wine is carried through, to be pure and natural and highlight the beautiful landscapes of the Cape.
This is a blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Grenache, Semillon and Harslevelu. It is matured in old oak for 10 months with a natural fermentation. It has a pear and white peach nose with a fruity, acidic palate, making it an interesting and detailed wine
This has been described as unusual and geeky. It is a pure Chenin which had skin contact lasting nine weeks. It is a concentrated citrus, marzipan and spice nose with a fresh acidic swirl.
A perfect 50/50 blend which brings together a whole bunch fermentation which is then matured in old oak for 10 months. It has a red cherry, strawberry and fynbos palate with a very dry finish.
Also whole bunch fermented in old oak for 10 months, this is a light fresh palate singing of fruit, flowers and candy.
This highlights everything we know and love of a great Syrah. Black berries, spice, white pepper and fynbos. It is the perfect red with just the right complexity to it.
This is classically a wilder red with an earthy nose, thick with notes of smoke and meat
and black fruit. Richer than the others in the range, it still possesses a sophisticated freshness.
