This month’s #LIQUIDSOCIAL curators have teamed up to create a Southern Suburbs powerhouse of hospitality. On the right, we have Jared, undoubtedly the coolest tour guide around, known better by his social media handle, @jaredinCPT. To the left, we have Matt, winemaker extraordinaire, who is at the helm of winemaking at legendary Klein Constantia Wine Estate in the historic Constantia Wine Valley.
They have come together to bring subscribers a selection of packs that are a testament to their love of all things South African wine, with a special nod to their favourite wine valley in a dedicated “Explore Constantia” pack, amongst the 8 packs they have curated for subscribers this month.
February is harvest time, the busiest of the year for winemakers. So while Matt was stuck at Klein Constantia, working hard to bring us the 2019 vintage, we got to know a little more about Jared in a fast fire round of questions, read more below:
Cybercellar: Describe the Constantia Wine Valley in 3 words
Jared: Opulent modern history
CC: A food and wine pairing that screams Constantia?
Jared: Sauvignon Blanc and Goats Cheese, or Peppadew creamy chicken pasta!
CC: Gun to your head – Name the most important cultivar in your personal wine journey. Why?
Jared: Viognier – I love new discoveries, and even after trying one for several months I hadn’t come across Viognier. When I did I fell in love with the elevated stone fruit notes and exceptionally perfumed floral nose.
CC: Jared, how has knowledge of the wine industry enhanced your experiences as a tour guide?
Jared: From a knowledge perspective it’s been massively helpful, as I’ve been able to better answer my guests’ questions. From an experiential aspect, my wine writing and profiling on social media has helped me build solid relationships with the farms themselves, so when I’ve visited with guests they feel more at home and that they’re getting a very personal experience.
More on this month’s curators
Jared is an experience junkie and aficionado: new experiences and an ever-changing horizon keep him alive. Of course, waking up in Cape Town means there is much to explore. And then the rest of South Africa! So much to see and so little time! He splits his time between travel writing, running private tours, and working with brands on social media content creation.
His love for wine began when he moved to Cape Town seven years ago. He now profiles wine estates for his own social media, and also a host of other publications. He’s always looking for an interesting story, and a delicious bottle of wine to accompany it.
Matthew grew up in Johannesburg, but a keen interest in winemaking saw him relocate to the Cape to pursue an education in this field. After graduating from Stellenbosch University with a Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) in Viticulture and Oenology, Matt worked at various local and international estates gaining vital experience.
Harvests at renowned estates from Stellenbosch to St Emilion in France meant that Matt was more than prepared to take on the role of Assistant Winemaker at Klein Constantia in 2008 under Adam Mason’s guidance. Today he is their winemaker.
