The MR de Compostella is a critically acclaimed collaboration between friends and winemakers Mzokhona Mvemve and Bruwer Raats. Raats is the owner and winemaker of Raats Family Wines, where he has earned a reputation for industry leading Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Mzokona Mvemve is a graduate of Stellenbosch University and one of South Africa’s first qualified black oenologists.
The two friends met while working at Delaire Graff winery in 2004 and decided to join forces in the pursuit of a mutual goal: to produce SA’s most consistent premium quality wine, without the constraints of style, varietal or tradition. In combining their artistry and knowledge, Mvemve and Raats strive to create something that is greater than the sum of its parts. The name de Compostella (meaning “field of stars” or “compilation of stars”) was chosen to reflect the fact that each component of the final blend is vinified and crafted individually to be able to stand alone as a world class varietal wine. The truly magnificent Compostella Blend manifests from selecting the best of the best from each contributing cultivar.
Grapes are sourced from within Stellenbosch, widely recognized as one of the Cape’s premier red wine-producing regions. Each block of each varietal is vinified separately. After 12 months in barrel, the varietal components are tasted blind and rated on a 100-point scale, and any component that either winemaker rates below 90 is discarded. The highest scoring varietals are using in descending rating (highest to lowest) and blended according to this formula. The blended wine is then returned to barrel for an additional 8-12 months of aging in a combination of new and older French oak barrels.
The MR de Compostella is one of SA’s top investment wines, the price of which has risen approximately 200% over ten vintages due to the huge international and local acclaim it has garnered vintage after vintage. It’s SA’s highest rated Bordeaux blend from the Wine Advocate, and is lauded for its sheer brilliance by leading international wine critics Tim James, James Molesworth and Stephen Tanzer. The local Platter wine guide has also awarded it with its highest 5 star rating. It’s the first South African red wine to be chosen for Emirates First Class, and the Wine Advocate also selected it as one of the 50 most memorable wines in the world in 2011 – another first for a South African wine. It was one of the Top 5 SA luxury red wines and rated in the TOP 2 performing investment wines in the Liv-ex SA. The previous four vintages all scored over 94 points from the Wine Advocate, the list goes on…. In addition the 2014 has once again been chosen for Emirates First Class.
‘Bruwer Raats may well be the most exciting and forward-thinking winemaker in Stellenbosch at the moment. No…Make that IS the most exciting and forward-thinking winemaker,’ – Neal Martin of the Wine Advocate.
Often described as the “baby Compostella” for punching way above its weight, the 2014 Red Jasper is a true gem. This Bordeaux blend is complex and structured, likened to an iron fist in a silky glove. At our promotional price of only R150 per bottle it’s a fantastic wine to stock up on without compromising on quality – the exceptional track record speaks for itself.
The Red Jasper is one of the oldest gemstones and also embodied the name of our beloved Father, Jasper Raats Sr., who was one of the founders and viticulturists of Raats Family Wines. This wine is an ode to him and celebrates his life and the passion he had for cultivating quality Cabernet Franc. The Red Jasper gemstone brings hidden feelings to the surface, creates harmony and offers new perspective, just like our father did.
