Duncan Savage has been a winemaker since graduating in 2004 at Elsenburg Aricultural Collage, achieving numerous awards for Cape Point Vineyards. Over the years, his wines at Cape Point Vineyards have been recognised both locally and internationally, with numerous 5 star ratings and named as Producer of the year by John Platter Guide, Winery of the year at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, various 90+ Wine Spectator ratings, and the Best Sauvignon Blanc in the world over £10 according to the Decanter World Wine Awards.
Duncan has always been a believer in traditional wine production methods in the cellar and focuses intensely on what happens in the vineyards. In a rather bold and unique move, Duncan recently decided to go solo when he purchased his own cellar in the CBD of Salt River, Cape Town, producing his own label after the family name – SAVAGE wines.
You may be wondering how a winemaker can focus on what happens in the vineyards without owning any vineyards. You may also argue that his challenge in the vineyard has become even greater than originally expected which makes it that much more interesting. Duncan travels more than 70 000 kms a year building relationships with and sustaining 17 vineyard locations across the Western Cape to purchase grapes at a premium rate for his wines. The sites are specifically chosen by Duncan himself to express a sense of place and it is not always easy with some of the older crops generating lower yields and therefore requiring sustainable farming methods that will benefit both parties.
At Cybercellar, we were fortunate to secure the newly released 2017 white wines and 2015 red to offer a unique 12 pack just for you at R3200.
Duncan is proud to make wines that express the true terroir and craft that is South African winemaking – a major player the world over.
