From the onset of the prestigious Raats Family Wines project, the focus has been on two grape varieties – Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc sourced from various blocks in Stellenbsch. Founder, Bruwer Raats together with his cousin, Gavin Bruwer Slabbert, has expanded the winery’s range since it’s birth in 2004 and they have been winning prestigious awards and recognition ever since. Raats Family Wines is indeed one of the most awarded wines of our time and Platter’s Winery of the year 2018.
“Our vision has always been to create exceptional wines with a unique sense of place and we feel that we have definitely achieved this with these vintages.” Says Bruwer in a Platter’s Guide interview.
He adds, “I think it is the biggest achievement for a winemaker to stand in a vineyard and imagine what the wine would taste like and then experience that same sense of a place in a glass.”
It’s no wonder that five of the seven Raats Family Wines have been awarded the highest Platter’s rating this year. The vineyards were both lanted in 2009 from carefully selected clones with unusually high planting density. The 2015 vintage of MR De Compostella again this year gained the platters top rating. It’s been altogether a year of remarkable success for Bruwer Raats, the man behind winery of the year.
Mzokhona Mvemve and Bruwer Raats have teamed together to focus on a single vine, a Bordeaux red blend, and on quality more than style, so they make up varies with the vintage. Each variety is sourced from top sites around Stellenbosch, vinified separately and tasted. Then the blend is composed hence the wines name from only the best parcels. Bruwer’s favourite red grape Cabernet Franc usually features prominently.
“When we started MR De Compostella, we wanted to do something exceptional in terms of wine quality. The belief is that one can do better if one joins minds, knowledge and winemaking philosophy.” Says Mzokona Mvemve.
MR De Compostella and Raats Family Wines have become brands that showcase the absolute best that South African wine has to offer, proving that vintage after vintage what the meeting of two strong winemaking minds can do when they come together. When Mzokhona Mvemve and Bruwer Raats started MR De Compostella, they wanted to do something exceptional in terms of quality.
