Summer is upon us and with it the promise of longer days spent lounging next to various bodies of water, sipping on our favourite refreshing drinks. While most are happy quaffing on a simple glass of Sauvignon Blanc, one would be pleasantly surprised by the wide range of wines and gin that pair exceptionally well with summer! Below is a selection of our personal favourite wines and gin to be sipping on this summer. Ones that will help you freshen up, get into the spirit and assist in making your festive season ultimately special.
Sauvignon Blanc has been a South African staple for many years and it will be, for many to come. There’s something about its zippy acidity that makes it the ultimate wine to be enjoying whenever the heat becomes too much to handle and all you want to do is lounge around.

While there is no taking away from this varietal’s place in our line-up of summer drinks, you could switch it up by experimenting with variations of the style. Sauvignon Blanc from cooler wine regions, like Elgin, have a higher acidity that their traditional warm-climate counterparts, making them even more refreshing. They typically have a lower alcohol content. Because the sun is less harsh in cool-climate wine regions, grapes have an extended ripening time, which results in a lower sugar content and gives the wine a light body (which ultimately translates to: longer days in the sun with shorter mornings spent regretting your well-deserved fun!)
Enjoy this, the most refreshing of white wines, next to the beach. With myriads of people flocking toward the ocean during summer, be sure to be cooled down by its acidity and tropical fruit flavours!

When it comes to Rose, most wine lovers are divided into separate camps that either
support or despise the style! This does make sense in certain contexts, thanks to
stereotypes and more experienced wine lovers that do not want to be associated with certain producers. We are here to tell you, no more! Summer is all about the new and, in our expert opinion, we must encourage you to experiment with different expressions of this diverse style of wine!
Rose can be beautifully refreshing, turning down the volume on the acidity and fruit
forwardness that is so prominent in fresh white wines. It is a romantic style of wine that pairs wonderfully with pink and red fruit like watermelon and pomegranate.

Try Rose that has been made from red wine grapes! Beautiful expressions of Rose have
been made from Pinotage and Mourvedre grapes. These styles of the wine have a lower
acidity and their flavour profile is similar to that of red wine.
Try the GlenRosé from L’Avenir Wine Estate in Stellenbosch
Appreciate Rose’s stunning colour along with a summer sunset. When day turns to night, switch from your refreshing Sauvignon Blanc to a blissful sunset in your glass in the form of your favourite pink hued vino.
Light Red Wines
While there are some that religiously punt their dark, peppery Shiraz, come rain or shine, it is generally accepted that full-bodied red wines are reserved for winter only. There is another way to enjoy red wine in summer, and it’s much more exciting! Light red wines bring to the table a convenient pairing of all the good found in white and red wines respectively. First of all, it’s red. Better yet, it can be chilled like a white wine. But it is the beautiful red fruit flavour profile, without the added harshness of bombastic tannin, that have wine lovers truly swooning over this style of wine. It is the perfect summer drink for all. There are wonderful offerings available at premium and value price points.

The best expressions of Cinsault come from the Swartland wine region. While it is one of the country’s oldest agricultural regions, it has only recently gained popularity as a region that produces fine wines. The heritage and versatility of these grapes make it a perfect pairing for South Africa’s favourite pass time, a Braai. Light up a fire on a luxe summer evening and enjoy a glass of slightly chilled Cinsault. Crisp and refreshing!
