The 2009 vintage of the Morgenster Estate Reserve is a little more austere upfront, with its Cabernet Sauvignon component quite prominent on both the nose and palate. Expect lead pencil lead and cigar box characters, overlying a rich cassis sweetness and bold structure. We've chosen this vintage as well as the 2010 as two of our favourite as they so beautifully contrast one another. This, the 2009, shows great power and persistence, where the 2010 is more subtle in structure, with bright fruit and great elegance. On the palate this 2009 shows sweeter dark berry fruit, contrasted by a subtle minerality. The few years of age now give us velvety tannins, but these still have a firmness and great focus, suggesting continued cellaring potential.
