April's 4 Star Chenin Blanc Mystery (Case of 6)

We recently tasted through the wines of a young estate in the Breedekloof that is doing things a little differently. "Less is more" is the motto of their winemaker, who is year on year refining their wine style to one of incredible elegance and restraint and is fast becoming noticed by the critics for this. This, an older, 2014 vintage, Chenin blanc, was produced in a slightly richer style with fruit from various regions - Darling, Breedekloof, Botrivier and the Swartland. As a result, the flavour profile ranges from fresh green melon to ripe yellow fruit and a honeyed, bees-wax texture with a subtle note of minerality. Extended lees contact lends it a great texture and some weight, which along with a good acidity, has carried it well through a few years of bottle age. Drink now.

A vintage vertical of Vergenoegd's Estate Blend - a classic styled, bold Stellenbosch Bordeaux blend which has proven itself a wine of incredible longevity. The 2008 vintage was described in the Platter 2018 guide as "Still-youthful 2008 cab-led Bordeaux blend shows fine spectrum of blackcurrant, liquorice & leafy earthiness". We are in agreement about this incredible youthfulness for a 10 year old wine and recently tasted a 1974 Vergenoegd at the winery to discover it still showed a bright, if delicate, acidity which upheld the otherwise tertiary fruit and leathery character. Therefore, without further ado, we bring you a trio of the 2004, 2005 and 2006 wines, awarded two Platter 4.5 and one 4 Star amongst them in their years of release. All show their age with more stewed, dried fruit notes, which in the 2004 are almost port-like, however, much like the 1974 we tasted, the fine acidity persists and lends freshness.
