Platter’s 2022 South African Wine Guide

Your guide to buying Platter’s top-rated wines

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – we’re talking, of course, about Platter’s Wine Guide announcing their 2022 list of 5-star winners – including the likes of AA Badenhorst, Alheit Vineyards, Swerwer, Taaibosch and Kanonkop. So, what exactly does that coveted 5-star status mean? South African wines that score 95+ points on the internationally recognised 100-point scale make it into a second round of (blind!) tasting by a small panels of experts. Every wine on the final list represents only the finest in SA. But don’t take our word for it – go on, taste for yourself!

PLATTER’S TOP-RATED

What is the Platter’s SA wine guide?

The Platters guide is an annual, comprehensive guide featuring hundreds of producers from South Africa’s winelands. The detailed format provides a full view of producers, brands and individual wines.

Who decides on Platter’s star ratings?

Platter’s views itself as a guide and not a competition, which means its ratings are based off blind tastings from a panel of 13 esteemed wine experts as well as label-sighted assessment to truly understand the quality of the wine. Wines go through label-sighted tastings for their first round, with wines scoring 93 or above being retasted blind to ultimately decide the 5-star wines.

What does a Platter’s star mean?

The Platter’s stars start at a score of ½ a star out of 5, correlating to 60-64 points on an internationally accepted scale. Every star up is between 2 and 5 points which means the 5-star wines are all scored at 95-100 points.

Why is Platter’s so important?

With a rapidly growing wine industry and incredibly dense selection of wines to choose from, South Africans have their hands full picking their new treat to uncork. Platter’s prides itself on being the one-stop guide for in-depth knowledge about the South African wine landscapes, producers, brands and wines. It has become synonymous with a trusted source of wine knowledge and continues to provide insight after 41 years since its first edition.
